WORKING WITH ROSEMARY THE LEADER - Susan Barr and Wendy Cave

Rosemary the Story Teller

It would be much easier to talk about Rosemary because there is so much to tell.  When we think about her we see her in flight and hear her soundtrack.  For almost a decade we listened to Rosemary’s stories. We have been inspired and we flourished because Rosemary’s ‘narrative based’ leadership taught us so much about ourselves and others.  With Rosemary, there is always a story to learn from and no conversation with her is ever superficial.  Rosemary’s life story and her professional leadership are so intertwined.  Her strength as a relationship builder is a stand out feature. Rosemary the Effortless Juggler

At the O’Connell Centre, Rosemary was an effortless juggler of issues, potential conflicts, system imperatives and political intrigues hatched out of Manning Clarke Offices.  She balanced the needs of staff, students, communities, directors, and clients, John, Sam and later Oscar the cat. One of her most engaging leadership qualities was the way in which she never failed to see the absurdity in what life and work at times threw her way.

Rosemary the Fearless

Rosemary is the most human faced, task-focused leader we’ve ever met.  Through the years we’ve watched her take on challenges and extract incredible possibilities.  She is clever, a fast thinker who relishes taking on worthy adversaries in robust intellectual argument.  Rosemary’s special quality lies in enhancing relationships in the process.  What’s more, she generally wins!

Our Learning from Rosemary

Rosemary modelled many leadership attributes and she inspired us to be

  • Passionate
  • Persistent
  • Principled
  • Political

From Rosemary we have learned to:

  • be positive;
  • nurture relationships;,
  • take a risk,
  • embrace challenges; and
  • tell our story.

How lucky we are to have worked with Rosemary.

Rosemary the College Principal - Rosemary Koina and Lynne Bean

Passionate about learning

As a leader Rosemary cared about every student, every issue confronting public education, every teacher and every staff member. Her strength was in the relationships she established with students, staff and parents; her tremendously broad knowledge and her intellectual rigour.

Visionary Leader

Rosemary saw endless possibilities for improving outcomes for all students.  She had the gift of bringing out the best in others and helping them to realise their potential.  Rosemary took on the challenges with enthusiasm and relished the exciting places these took her.  In her time at Lake Ginninderra she implemented and encouraged many lasting changes.

Wicked Sense of Humour

Rosemary had a story for all occasions. These stories were sprinkled with delightful twists and turns from her quirky humour and ability to see the true perspective of things in the overall scheme of life.CollegeFarewell

Peoples Person

Rosemary gave time to every person who crossed her threshold.  She "knew" her staff rather than "knew about them".  As a leader Rosemary valued people and respected their individual strengths and attributes.  Being such an intelligent and perceptive person she also recognised weaknesses in others just as much as she recognised them in herself.

It was a real privilege to work with Rosemary as Principal - she gave her staff so much of herself - her time, her support, her encouragement and her friendship.
